Subconscious¶
A local-first agentic workspace with one engine and clients for the places you work.
Start here¶
- Run from source → — Start the engine and the first-release Windows desktop client.
- Code in VS Code → — Agent chat, reviewable edits, coding tools, context, and MCP.
- Explore every client → — Adaptive Flutter UI, terminal client, and Chromium extension.
- Understand the engine → — Local API, agents, encrypted configuration, workspaces, and retrieval.
One engine, shared context¶
Subconscious runs a Python engine in the background and keeps workspace, thread, message, model, tool, and retrieval state behind a local REST and WebSocket API. The desktop app and coding extension connect to that same engine, so a thread started in one client is available in the other without a second local database or a sync step.
The first platform release targets Windows desktop. Source implementations also exist for responsive Flutter web/mobile, a basic Dart terminal client, a compact Chromium extension, and the VS Code/Open VSX-compatible coding extension. See Feature status for current scope and release boundaries.
Product surfaces¶
| Surface | Best for | Current status |
|---|---|---|
| Windows desktop | Full workspace, chat, files, models, tools, and settings | First release target; run from source |
| VS Code / Open VSX-compatible editors | Coding chat and IDE-native agent tools | Implemented; development/manual install |
| Flutter web and Android | Remote or responsive access to the main UI | Implemented source targets; not the first release |
| Dart terminal UI | Browsing and continuing existing conversations | Basic source client |
| Chromium extension | Compact workspace, thread, chat, and root-file access | Limited unpacked extension |
| Local Python engine | Shared agent, API, storage, indexing, and tray runtime | Implemented; run from source |
Local engine and cloud service are different components
The local engine owns conversation and workspace data. api.subconscious.chat is the thin identity and integration service for accounts, linked providers, encrypted service connections, and webhooks. Cloud deployment documentation applies to that service, not to the local engine.
